Week 1

Week 1 (Due 9/16)

I have done yoga in the past. Maybe a total of 5 classes all in all. I have never been able to take it seriously. I have always done it with friends, where we would laugh when the other members of the class would chant. This semester, I am going to take these yoga classes seriously. I want to see if my mind or body will be any different toward the end of the semester.

I took my first class this week at Hot or Not Yoga in Manahawkin. I have taken a class or two here before, primarily the 'hot' ones, where the rooms are 100+ degrees. This time the class was not that warm in there (thank god!). When I walked in the studio, there was a peaceful feel. Everyone was very friendly and calm. They showed me to the room where the class was going to take place. There was peaceful music playing, and the room was a bright orange. There were a few people laying on their mats, stretching or meditating. Me, being a yoga newbie, I just sat and watched. I looked around the room and noticed some wall hangings and mini statues of what I think are buddhas?? Not sure.

Everyone seemed like they knew more about the class than me. They all wore cool yoga-style headbands and just looked like hippies. The teacher entered the room and she looked like even more of a hippie. I felt out of place. We began the class. I felt very inexperienced, being that the teacher would tell us to go into a pose, and everybody new the pose by the name. Not me. I had to look around to see what everyone is doing. I tried my hardest in the class. We did a lot of poses that made me realize how inflexible I have become! Leaving the class, I felt determined. I wanted to become more flexible as well as gain more balance in order to not feel and seem so out of place in the next classes. I also feel determined to learn the poses and names soon, so that I do not feel uneducated for next time.

The next day I was sore. I am going to take another class later this week.
